A talented swimmer, Agate spends her days training and practicing her swimming technique. Already an accomplished athlete at a young age, she keeps a steady and modest head on her shoulders and continues to train hard. Known to keep a cool head and carry on, she is grace under pressure, and takes challenges seriously and head on. Her athletic training in combination with childhood mimicry of Wallace has given her a graceful elegance to her movements.
Originally, Agate trained in all sorts of athletic competitions - she ran and swam, participating in triathlons and marathons for fun. As she grows older, she has begun specializing in swimming, with an interest in long distance swimming; the 1500m freestyle and the 10 km marathon swim race are her particular favourites.
As a child, she took up swimming, running, and other exercise as a way to clear her mind, which led to her focus on athletics. Despite her talent in sports, she managed to find a good balance and maintain her excellent grade in academics.
Although she was offered the opportunity to go on a traditional Pokémon journey, she turned it down to continue her focus on her athletic abilities. Instead, she opted for a compromise where she explored the routes and waters on her days off, while staying near home to continue to use the training equipment and receive guidance from a coach.
Being a trained athlete, Agate can run, swim, and bike much longer and faster than the everyday person. She is adept at the skill of using mana to give herself greater endurance and energy.
A scion of the ancient people of Sootopolis, Agate has the ability to open the Sky Pillar, and other locations that are keyed to the bloodline.
Her affinity is with water: although her ability to manipulate water is limited, she draws energy from the water when in contact with it, making her a force to be reckoned with in the water.
Steven (father): While both of them are obsessed with different things, they frequently support each other's obsessions. Agate likes to bring him rocks she finds whenever she travels for competitions and listen to him talk about them for hours on end. Her own crochetwork often ends up on display with Steven's rock collection - they're the perfect coasters, and he brings her any cool yarn he comes across. That means it's often the ridiculously expensive stuff that she then uses to make lace doilies.
Wallace (father): They share an affinity for water, swimming, and gracefulness. Wallace is where Agate learned to compete, teeth gritting determination and grace under pressure and gracious sportsmanship all in one. Wallace is the parent she hates disappointing - she looks for his approval and his perspective first among her parents.
Kyanite (younger brother): They're close in some ways and agonizingly distant in others. While there's an easy peace between them when they spend quiet time together in each other's company, things get more difficult when they're supposed to spend it in conversation. They try, but either they have painfully polite small talk about nothing of consequence or one of them gets increasingly frustrated with the other. She hopes that once her brother has some measure of success and contentment with his life that they might be able to get over this block in their relationship.
Alma (girlfriend): Agate's professional tennis player girlfriend! They met because they were in the same athlete circles, and using the same training facilities. Spurring each other on to be the best at their respective sports, they bring out the best competitive spirit in each other. If they ever have the good fortune to be travelling in the same area to compete, it's a happy occasion.
Agate crochets as a hobby. It keeps her hands occupied. Often, she crochets lace doilies that end up as coasters for Steven's rock collection. She's quite proud of them.
Agate is a common stone. Her hobby of crocheting lace is a reference to lace agate, a particularly distinctive type of agate.
