Aulu is a quiet individual who prefers his solitude. Interested in photography, he very much prefers being the person behind the camera and detests being in front of it. He's been roped into helping Mahina and Aina with their vlogs, and considers it useful experience, even if he's started passing it off to Hollis so he can further his own goals.
Aulu can see and hear spirits and ghosts. On occasion, usually with some prodding from Mahina, he dabbles in spirit photography.

Aulu can see and communicate with spirits and ghosts, something he's picked up from both of his parents. More worryingly, not all ghosts are friendly, and the dead are often quite pushy and insistent, leading to Aulu's more withdrawn nature. He's gotten better at this as he gets older and more confident with throwing his weight around with the ghosts once it's known that he's more likely to do you a favour if you're polite about it. More often than not, he'll help a spirit so it can pass on, but he's much more selective with requests from humans to contact the dead. He's of the opinion that the those of the living world should rarely intersect with those that have moved on.

Allister (father):
Mahina: Aulu's grateful that Mahina befriended him that fateful day. He's much less enthused about her interest in ghost stories, because he knows exactly what sort of trouble they can get up to. Cue him helping Mahina with filming, and then often having to sneak off and threaten or make nice with the ghosts. Let's just say it's done wonders for his courage. It's harder for him to stand up for himself than it is for him to stand up for his friends. He thinks Mahina is too nice, and gives the ghosts too much leeway. He rarely voices this though, because a) he hates conflict, and b) he respects her for it, but wishes that she'd just leave this sort of stuff to the experts and quit poking around in stuff she probably shouldn't. He can also sense a sort of shadow, or a deep sadness in her, and on occasion, has seen the outline of a ghostly figure that's often right next to her... but he keeps his mouth shut because that's clearly not his business.
Aina: Aina is, in some ways, easier to get along with for Aulu; she's louder and more annoying and more opinionated, but at least she's not talking about ghosts. Blunt faced honesty gets him much farther with Aina, she's just as obsessed with making sure the shot looks good, and her ability to create lighting makes both their jobs much easier. At the beginning of their friendship, Aulu's worried she's just giving him the time of day because she's Mahina's friend, not because she wants to get to know him, but this is clearly not the case after years of travelling together and after Mahina departs to take an internship with Professor Fennel in Unova. Aina always saves him something to eat after they shoot her vlog, or even between shots.
Hollis: Of their travelling group, Hollis is the one Aulu finds the most difficult to get along with. Firstly because he came along later, and secondly because it felt like he was trying to take his place in their group. He's loud and obnoxious and Aulu's doing just fine with filming his friends' vlogs, thank you. He was irritated and jealous, and didn't take his inclusion very well. Later, when the girls point out it leaves Aulu with more time to pursue his own photography related goals, is when he starts slowly changing his mind and letting Hollis take over the parts he wasn't very fond of anyway. It's worked out, and he feels less insecure in his friendships, so he's mellowed out towards him. He does care about him, but he still thinks he's obnoxious though.
The friendship bracelet on Aulu's wrist is a gift from Aina.
Aulu is the best battler in his travelling party. On occasion, he'll seek out battling opportunities for a chance to hone his skills, a release of pent-up energy, or to add to the party's funds. (Not easy to fund both top of the line electronic equipment and Aina's restaurant expenses!) On rare occasions he will be called upon to battle so that the party can get into certain high-class restaurants.
Aulu's Shedinja comes from Hollis' Nincada's evolution into Ninjask.
The piece of hair that comes up and around is meant to mimic a halo.
Āulu is a Hawaiian name for several species of trees: Rockia sandwicensis, Planchonella sandwicensis, and Sapindus oahuensis (soapberry). The sap of Rockia sandwicensis and Planchonella sandwicensis are used as birdlime, to trap birds.
Filming Equipment: Cameras, microphones, lights, and laptop. And plenty of storage space! The group splits the filming gear amongst themselves, but Aulu takes special care of his cameras. He's very careful with them.
Father's Mask: Before he left home, Allister gave Aulu one of his many masks. He had many eventful battles with it and hoped it would be a good luck charm for his son.
Key Stone: Aulu keeps his Key Stone on a necklace, and tends to keep it hidden, tucked away under his hoodie.
