As a young trainer, his impetuosity and arrogance led to a spectactular rivalry with Maelstrom, his travelling companion. Having come out on top, his arrogance hasn't cooled one bit - but it's justified, given his battling talent. Despite his pride, he's actually a skilled orator - he's persuasive and charming enough to sway people to his side. He's clever enough to pinpoint others' weak points and strike at their insecurities and vulnerabilities.
Despite his dragon affinity, he tends to specialize flying types. The longer he stays in position as champion, the more paranoid he seems to get. His controlling tendencies have become exacerbated, to the point of monitoring camera and audio feeds, as well as various media. However, for a man so concerned about his power, he tends to hand off most of it to those he knows will be loyal to him.

Maelstrom: His oldest and most loyal friend, Maelstrom is perhaps the one person that can make him think twice. He does care for Maelstrom, and demonstrates it in little ways that only they would understand. Otherwise, he is as cold and brusque and impersonal with him as he is with the rest of his subordinates.
Cordelia: Cordelia and Eltan had a rivalry that started out friendly, turned into friendly bickering, and then turned into angry, nasty arguments that Maelstrom tried to defuse. Both were driven and stubborn, believing their viewpoint was correct, which eventually ended up turning the travelling group on its head. While Eltan does regret her departure and does hold some fondness for her memory years later, it's a boon for him in that he gets Maelstrom to himself.
