Flint is well known for being overly enthusiastic in both his battling and his day to day life. Persistent and passionate, Flint strives forward the only way he knows how - with full verve and a refusal to give up. When he suffers setbacks, he burns out, equal parts in disbelief, disappointment, emotional exhaustion, and just bummed out, but he always picks himself up again after a good period of processing.
Behind his jovial and jokester front, Flint is quite emotionally astute, easily picking up on other people's emotions. The challenge, for him, is figuring out what to do about them. In the case of Volkner and his family, he's dedicated to solving the problem in the best way he can think of. For enemies, he's ruthless with his needling on the sensitive topic in question. For everyone else, he's somewhere inbetween - he'll take some care, but otherwise feigns oblivious obtuseness, avoids the topic, and barrels on with the conversation. He's an excellent extroverted people person, and while his informal nature earns him disapproval from the older generation, he naturally gels very well with the younger.

Flint inherits his mother's fire affinity, allowing him to withstand intense heat without injury or discomfort. It's more of a resistance than a complete immunity - he can't walk through lava or anything dramatic, but he can handle a hot pan fresh off the stove without mitts. It makes him a bit blasé about setting food on fire, which understandably alarms his housemates.
Buck (younger brother): Flint only wants the best for his younger brother, and for Buck to find his own path in life. That being said, what kind of a brother would he be if they didn't rib each other from time to time?
Shira (mother): Flint is immensely close to his mother, and insists on providing for her every comfort now that he's got a job at the Elite Four. While she appreciates this, she needs the work to keep herself moving and he has a tendency to go overboard.
Volkner (husband): His best friend since childhood, Flint and Volkner met in kindergarten and have been extremely close since. They've been through thick and thin together. Flint was there for Volkner when his parents died at sea. Volkner was there for Flint when his father died in a fiery explosion. They've seen each other at their best and at their worst. Mostly they see each other as best friends first and foremost, except they got a little too drunk that one time on vacation and woke up married. Flint worries a lot about Volkner, because he's seen how he can easily lose himself in his work and his depression.
Cyrus: Cyrus was Volkner and Flint's assigned older reading buddy, and the friends quickly decided that this older kid was the coolest ever and proceeded to follow him around like a pair of particularly stubborn ducklings. While Flint didn't share Cyrus and Volkner's knack for all things mechanical, he was more than happy to run around and help out with tools and heavy lifting and those sorts of things. He's picked up a few tricks from them here and there, although he's nowhere near their level. Flint, being more emotionally astute than Volkner, had some inkling that Cyrus wasn't particularly fond of going home, and while he felt betrayed at Cyrus' intentions, found it easier in his heart to give him some leeway and measure of forgiveness.
Averno is a volcanic crater lake in Italy. In ancient times it referred to the entrance to the underworld. It shares letters with Avena, an oat genus, and Avenaro, Buck's German name.
Flint keeps a lot of things. He's got a small bag of marbles he and Volkner used to play with, a depleted Fire Stone his Flareon used to evolve, bits and pieces from some mechanical experiment Volkner and Cyrus were cooking up back in the day, and more. It all piles up in his room. Some are more precious than others, and those he takes with him or has them out on his desk, but more are lost to the chaos of his room.
