A young child when his parents died in a freak accident out a sea, Volkner was allowed to remain with his older sister, who took guardianship of him. This incident sobered Volkner greatly.

Family

Faraday (older sister): Volkner's relationship with his sister is awkward at times. As a teenager, he resented her suffocating presence and role in the unhappiness of the city. As an adult, he understands her desperation a little better and has forgiven her for it.

Marcy (mother): Volkner has few clear memories of his departed mother. He knows she was the gym leader before her untimely death, loved the sea, and that she preferred water types. Some of his water type Pokémon were originally his mother's.

Flint (husband): His best friend since childhood, Flint and Volkner met in kindergarten and have been extremely close since. They've been through thick and thin together. Flint was there for Volkner when his parents died at sea. Volkner was there for Flint when his father died in a fiery explosion. They've seen each other at their best and at their worst. Mostly they see each other as best friends first and foremost, except they got a little too drunk that one time on vacation and woke up married.

Buck (brother-in-law): Flint's younger brother, Volkner sees him as his younger brother as well. They've babysat him multiple times, and he's watched Buck grow up from a baby to a courageous young man. He's mighty fond of him, and wishes him all the best on his journey.

Shira (mother-in-law): Volkner can't count the many number of times he's crashed on her couch and she's treated him as practically one of her own children. He's extraordinarily grateful to her and her care. When Flint and Buck are busy, Volkner will check up on her and bring her groceries.

Friends

Cyrus: Cyrus was Volkner and Flint's assigned older reading buddy, and the two of them quickly decided that this older kid was the coolest ever and proceeded to follow him around like a pair of particularly stubborn ducklings. Cyrus and Volkner in particular bonded over a love of mechanical and electrical work, and Volkner held him in particular high regard for being his first mentor. When Cyrus' plans were revealed, he felt particularly betrayed by his actions, and was very upset with the news.

Main Pokémon

Volkner has turned part of Sunyshore Gym into a space for afterschool robotics programs, tutoring children in coding and robotics basics. His protegés help him run the programs.

Sturm is German for storm. Sturm und Drang, translated to storm and stress, was a movement in Germanic literature and music about conveying free expression of extremes of emotion.

Marsilea quadrifolia, European waterclover, is a fern that can grow both in soil, and in water.
